The Sun Never Sets on the British Empire

Part 5 – February 1, 2015.   Now it’s their turn to eat.


What was on your shopping list on Friday?

Laundry soap                                   600 g                     50 bars
Tea biscuits                                    3/packet                 432 packets
Matches                                                                        360 boxes
100 shilling bank notes                   2/widow              9600 shillings

It doesn’t seem like much when you look at the list, but it filled the back of a small pickup truck when packed into 50 individual yellow bags (purchased at Job Lot in Clinton) along with along with 50 fleece blankets (Ikea) and some toys and books in donated suitcases.

Saturday’s annual day-long celebration consisted of the usual – renewal of acquaintances with our many Kasavai friends of nearly ten years running; children trying out the books and Lego blocks we brought;

lots of singing, dancing and praying;

We got a special gift




huge amounts to eat and drink for the widows, guests, and some 100 children;

and the finale where the widows each got a bag full of goodies and a small gift of 200 shillings (about $2.50) from CLOUT Cares, and every adult, including us, got a 2015 calendar produced by the widows.

Purple blanket, yellow bag full of stuff, a bar of soap, a calendar, and 200 shillings.

Sunday is a day of rest for us and Monday will be the beginning of our week-long journey to visit each widow at her home.
